šŸ—ƒļø From the archives: Free Press Gives Mothballs to Fight Cancer

Writer: Teppi ZuppoTeppi Zuppo

Throwback to sometime in the 1950's where Burlington's Rebekahs Lodge gathered and bagged mothballs equivalent to the weight of a Burlington Free Press columnist to be sold with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

The article and photo also includes one of our current members, Roxy Allen. When asked about this article at one of our recent meetings - in particular, WHY MOTHBALLS?? - Roxy said that she didn't entirely understand the purpose outside of raising money for cancer at that point, either.

This upcoming month at The Burlington Odd Fellows is Rebekah's Month! In addition to featuring spring-forward events - such as a plant and seed swap, poetry reading celebrating national poetry month, and a forager's potluck - we'll also be working towards reviving Burlington's Beatrice Rebekah Lodge through an initiation and regular meetings.

What are the Rebekah's?

The Rebekahs, also known as theĀ International Association of Rebekah Assemblies (IARA), and originally theĀ Daughters of Rebekah is an international service-oriented organization and a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. It was initially designed as the female auxiliary of the IOOF, but now allows members of all genders.

The general duties of the members of this unit are, ā€œTo live peaceably, do good unto all, as we have opportunity and especially to obey the Golden Rule, Whatsoever ye would that others should do unto you, do ye even so unto them.ā€
